Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is a fast-paced game that puts you in control of some of the best football clubs in the world. This series has had some minor mechanical issues in the past, but most of those problems have been addressed in this title. With multiple game modes, hundreds of players, and dozens of teams to choose from, Pro Evolution Soccer was designed for extreme fans of the sport. Here is a closer look at some of the tools and features that set this game apart from all other soccer titles.

When you first start this game, you will quickly realize that the graphics don’t stand out. While the players and stadiums are crisp, they seem to be slightly outdated. That being said, it seems as if the developers focused on complex gameplay. After choosing your team, you can skim through a wide variety of game modes including football life, skill training, Copa Libertadores club competition, and Champions League tournament play.

This title’s sound effects and soundtrack are quite stellar, and they both add an incredible amount of depth to the game. As you play through each match, you will hear your players huff and grunt as they become more tired. The soundtrack is catchy without being obtrusive, but you have the option of turning the music off if it ever becomes repetitive. The teams themselves are well-researched, but the game hasn’t been updated to reflect recent trades. Team and player stats are outdated as well, but those minor issues don’t detract from the gameplay.

The standout feature of this game is the complex mechanics while competing in matches. Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 has a steep learning curve for a sports game, but most players will enjoy that depth once they master the basic controls. Instead of focusing on a few key buttons for passing or shooting, you can input combinations of buttons to carry out advanced plays. This game also has a unique tempo that you will need to master. Attempting spins or sudden stops could send the ball flying, and you must get the timing right if you want to come out on top.

For most players, the biggest drawback of this game will be the lack of licensing for certain clubs and players. While Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 does have dozens of teams to choose from, you might not be able to find your favorite club or player. This game also has a steep learning curve, and that is going to turn some players off. Luckily, the complex mechanics and fast-paced gameplay overshadow those drawbacks.

Pros:

  • Great mechanics and controls
  • Nonstop action
  • Good selection of game modes

Cons:

  • Steep learning curve
  • Licensing issues with certain teams
